A firehouse with a second calling.
The Engine 2 SF Story
Engine 2 SF brings a new purpose to one of downtown San Francisco’s most distinctive historic buildings. Set inside a landmark 1908 firehouse at the edge of Chinatown and the Financial District, the event venue offers a memorable place to gather, learn, celebrate, and create.
Original architecture, a flexible open layout, and a nonprofit mission come together under one roof.
The building
BUILT IN 1908 · Reimagined in 2026
Engine 2 SF is housed in the former San Francisco Fire Department Engine Company No. 2 at 460 Bush Street. Designed by City Architect Newton J. Tharp, the Beaux-Arts firehouse entered service in December 1908, two years after the earthquake and fires that devastated downtown San Francisco.
It was the first firehouse rebuilt in the downtown district and one of only three classically inspired firehouses ever built in the city. Now San Francisco Landmark No. 143, the building retains the scale and architectural presence that made it an important civic building from the start.
Inside, the Lobby preserves historic details including a cast-iron spiral staircase and copper fire pole. Beyond it, the Engine Room serves as the main gathering space, with modern presentation technology and flexible configurations for a range of events. The Courtyard adds 960 square feet of outdoor space.
Above the entrance, the building's arched opening has looked out over Bush Street for more than a century. Its shape inspired the Engine 2 SF mark: a piece of the firehouse carried into the organization's next chapter.

Venue tables and chairs can be arranged for workshops, lectures, board meetings, company offsites, and a variety of small-group formats.

A retractable screen and ceiling-mounted projector support presentations and meetings that need a polished, professional setup.
From the Lobby to the Engine Room to the Courtyard, the space is designed to keep ideas, conversations, and gatherings moving.
A landmark for learning.
Engine 2 SF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed to advance healthcare education, professional development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and community-based healthcare initiatives.
We are developing a multidisciplinary clinical learning center where healthcare professionals, trainees, residents, educators, and community health participants can share ideas, build practical skills, and take part in educational programs that strengthen patient care and healthcare delivery.
Access is central to the mission. Within certain educational programs, Engine 2 SF intends to reserve participation opportunities for public health clinicians, trainees, residents, and healthcare providers serving underserved communities. The goal is simple: create more opportunities to learn across disciplines and help more people bring that knowledge back to the communities they serve.
Restoration is underway, with opening planned for late 2026. Event inquiries are open now. We’d love to hear what you’re imagining!
